The Use of Ammonia
Manufacturing Fertiliser – Urea as Globally Leading Nitrogen Fertiliser
- Urea
The main product of ammonia processing is urea.
fertiliser from urea
Urea for technical use - Ammonium phosphate
- Ammonium nitrate
originates from the neutralisation of ammonia with nitric acid, and is the main component of many fertilisers and common explosives.
For Manufacturing Chemicals
- Nitric acid, HNO3
is made into common fertilisers (CAN, AN, UAN) and technical products such as adipic acid, nitro compounds and aniline. It reacts with bases to produce nitrates. - Sodium bicarbonate, Soda production
- Sodium carbonate, Soda production
- Hydrocyanic acid , HCN
- hydrazine, N2H4,
In connection with other oxidisation agents, concentrated solutions are highly explosive, and partially hypergole. Thus, hydrazine is used primarily in rocket fuel and for electrochemical power generation in secondary cells. An important field of application is oxygen removal in the boiler feed water production in power plants.
For Explosive Production
- Ammonium nitrate, NH4NO3
is a primary component of common explosives.
For Plastic and Fibre Production
- Nylon,[(CH2)4-CO-NH-(CH2)6-NH-CO]
- Acrylnitrile and caprolactam for processing in the textile industry
- Amines and amides (polyamides)
For Production of Pharmaceuticals
Is used in the production of pharmaceuticals such as sulphonamide, which inhibits the growth and production of bacteria.
For Pulp and Paper Production
- Ammonium hydrogen sulphite, NH4HSO3,
is used to process wood into pulp.
For Use in Cooling Technology
Used in cooling facilities for the food industry (storage of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables), winter sport facilities (ice skating) and air conditioning for buildings.
For Use in the Steel Industry
Is used for blank annealing of steel and to extract zinc and nickel.
For Use in the Cleaning Industry
Ammonia solution is used as a cleaning product.
Flue Gas Cleaning
In Germany, approximately 90,000 tonnes of ammonia are used directly for flue gas cleaning, as is more than 160,000 tonnes of ammonia water (corresponding to 40,000 tonnes of ammonia), which makes up 20% of free market demand for ammonia.
Production of Ammonium hydroxide
Ammonium hydroxide is used to clean surfaces.
